How to Clean you Washing Machine Lint Trap Filter

How to Clean you Washing Machine Lint Trap Filter

For optimal performance, your washing machine requires maintenance, much like the other appliances in your house. As many of you are well aware, cleaning the dryer lint filter after each use will improve your dryer's performance and save your energy expenses.

You may not be aware, but your washing machine also contains a lint trap. It's a good idea to clean your washer's removable lint trap filter if one has one.

Signs that your Lint Filter needs Cleaning

  • Lint deposits on your clothes
  • Washing machine isn’t draining
  • Drum isn’t spinning

Do all Washing Machines have a Lint Trap Filter?

The majority of washing machines have detachable lint screens. Modern, high-efficiency machines come with a self-cleaning pump as an alternative.

Where can I locate my Washing Machine Lint Trap Filter?

Consult your instruction manual to find your lint filter the quickest method. As an alternative, you can locate your lint filter by looking inside your washing machine.

Usually, the filter for front-loading washers is located behind a small hatch in the front of the machine.

It is available for top-loading washers in the following ways:

Under the upper rim of the washer drum, on top of the agitator within the washer

A washing machine should always be unplugged from the power source before any repairs or maintenance are attempted. Seek assistance if you need to move or tilt the washing machine because they are heavy appliances that are prone to toppling over.

How to Maintain the Lint Filter in your Washing Machine

To clean your filter, you will need:

  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Small toothbrush or bristle brush

Step 1: Find the filter.

You have to find your lint filter first. For front-loading washers, the filter is often housed behind a little opening in front of the washer.

For top loaders: You must first remove the agitator if your filter is situated beneath it.

Step 2: Take the filter off.

After removing the filter, soak it for five to ten minutes in hot water with a few drops of liquid dishwashing soap. This will assist in releasing stuck-on residue and grime. It might require a quick scrub with a gentle bristle brush. Rinse well, then give it time to dry.

Note: The filter on front-loading washing machines may be a touch tight due to dirt accumulation in the machine. Take caution when removing to prevent cracking the filter cap.

Step Three: Examine the housing

Check the machine's interior for any extra lint or debris. A paper towel and a little brush can be used to clean the space where the filter is kept. Even harder-to-reach areas and microscopic crevices can be cleaned using a toothbrush.

Step 4: Change the filter.

Reinstall your filter in the housing after it has dried completely.

Overall

Regular maintenance of your washing machine, including cleaning the lint trap filter, is crucial for optimal performance and longevity. While many people are diligent about cleaning the dryer lint filter, the lint trap in your washing machine is often overlooked. Recognizing the signs of a clogged lint filter, such as lint deposits on clothes, drainage issues, or a non-spinning drum, is essential for timely intervention.
